10 benefits of swimming

There are many more benefits of swimming than the ten we will list, but these are the ones that are the most important. Swimming may not be part of people’s everyday workout routine, but it should be. Swimming is an excellent form of fitness and has the added benefit of being fun!

Here are just some of the benefits of swimming.

Better Sleep

There are studies showing how swimming helps with sleep in adults with insomnia. Being unable to sleep has longer repercussions, and swimming is one way to combat it. It’s not just a benefit for adults, though. Children who go swimming tend to have a more restful night’s sleep as they use more energy in a pool than they would if they were running around.

De-Stressor

We all know that exercise boosts your mood in general, but swimming is a known contributor to help mitigate the effects of stress. Making use of the pool when you are feeling stressed or anxious will naturally reduce the cortisol and adrenaline (known as the stress hormones) and replace them with mood-boosting endorphins, making you feel good. So make time to get into the pool if you are feeling stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed and allow the water to wash away your worries.

Muscle Definition

You should aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. This averages 200 minutes a week, but swimming can bring that time down again. Swimming takes more energy and is a great way to build some muscle. This is one of the major benefits of swimming as it offers so much potential to tone up all over your body. It also provides consistency which helps to keep the muscle definition.

Mental health Benefits

When working out, it is easy to stay connected to the online world and those around you. Swimming takes you away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and allows your mind time to reset from the constant digital stimulation.

Full body workout

Another great benefit of swimming is getting a full-body workout every time. No more cross trainer is needed as a swimming pool gives you everything you need. You will increase your heart rate without adding stress to the body and build your strength as the water provides you with gentle resistance.

Burns Calorie

Ever get out of a pool and feel like you haven’t eaten in a month? There’s a reason for that. Swimming slow to moderate pace can burn over 200 calories in just a half-hour. That’s more than double the amount burned when walking.

Low impact

Cardio can be hard on the joints and muscles, and the popularity of HIIT workouts has accelerated already aching joints people have. Why not swap out some of your workouts for a few laps in the pool to combat this? As water does the hard work for you and holds your body’s weight, you can enjoy a workout without the stress another workout such as running or cycling will give.

Pregnancy-safe

This benefit is only for people who can get pregnant, but generally, swimming is safe as it relieves the stress your bump puts on you. It also helps with reducing the swelling in your ankles and feet. Be sure to check with your GP before through to be sure it’s okay for you to go swimming.

Great for kids

Kids have a massive amount of energy in their small bodies, and getting rid of it before the end of the day can sometimes feel like a challenge. Swimming is a fun activity that doesn’t feel like they’re working out. Signing them up to swim classes or even just attending the local pool for some fun can get kids moving.

Affordable

There are a lot of public pools out there that allow you to either join the pool and gym or just get a day pass. If you are looking for an inexpensive, fun day, then attending a pool for the day is the way to do that.

Conclusion

There are many benefits of swimming, and these are just ten of them. Swimming is something that everyone can benefit from, regardless of fitness level. So go out and swim, and don’t forget to have fun!
