- Weights are fine for teens once a coach has taught them how to move well
- The Irish target for young people is an hour a day of moderate to vigorous activity
Someone in their class has started going to the gym, or their coach has said the under 16s should be doing strength work this winter, and suddenly your 14 year old wants a membership. Fair enough. But can they actually get one?
In Ireland it’s up to each gym. So rather than give you a vague answer, here’s how it works with us at Gym Plus, plus what we’d suggest for younger teens who are keen to get going.
Is There a Minimum Age to Join a Gym in Ireland?
There isn’t one set age that every gym follows. It isn’t written into law anywhere, so each gym decides for itself, mostly based on its insurance and on how closely staff can keep an eye on younger members. That’s why you’ll hear 16 from one place and something different from the next.
The gym floor is nearly always the sticking point. Free weights, cable machines, a 15 year old on their own trying to copy someone twice their size. You can see why gyms are careful. Swimming and instructor led classes are another matter, and that’s where younger teens usually find a way in.
Can 13 to 15 Year Olds Join Gym Plus?
Teenagers aged 13 to 15 can join Gym Plus on an under 16s membership at the Ashbourne, Drogheda, Naas, Rathfarnham and Swords family clubs. The under 16s membership costs €10 a month or €100 a year and covers swimming and Family Fit classes, which teens do with a parent. Under 16s cannot use the gym floor.
| 13 to 15 year olds | 16 and over | |
| Membership | Under 16s membership, €10 a month or €100 a year | Full membership with parent or guardian consent |
| Clubs | Ashbourne, Drogheda, Naas, Rathfarnham, Swords | All seven Gym Plus clubs |
| Gym floor | No | Yes |
| Pool | Yes, with a parent or guardian watching from the poolside | Yes, no adult needed |
| Classes | Family Fit, with a parent | Full class timetable |
| Sauna, steam room and spa pool | No | Yes |
If your teenager has talked about the gym for months without doing much about it, ten euro is a fairly painless way to find out if they will stick with it. Full prices are on the Gym Plus membership page.
What Changes When a Teenager Turns 16?
At 16, teenagers can join any of the seven Gym Plus clubs as full members, as long as a parent or guardian gives consent. Full membership opens up the gym floor, the full class timetable and the sauna, steam room and spa pool. In the pool, swimmers aged 16 and over no longer need an adult with them.
This is the stage where a bit of help matters most. Walking onto a busy gym floor at 16 can feel daunting, and plenty of adults feel the same. Every new Gym Plus member gets free training support when they join and a free fitness review every six weeks. If nerves are the real issue, sit down together and read our tips on how to beat gym intimidation.
Is Strength Training Safe for Teenagers?
Strength training is safe for teenagers when a coach supervises it and good technique comes before heavy weight. The idea that lifting weights stunts growth does not stand up. Supervised resistance training is linked to stronger bones, fewer sports injuries and better performance on the pitch.
Trouble usually starts with a programme copied from social media, or a group of mates seeing who can lift the most. A safer way to build up looks like this:
- Bodyweight first. Squats, lunges, press ups and planks.
- Light resistance next. Bands or light dumbbells.
- Learn the four basic movements. Squat, hinge, push and pull, with good form.
- Add weight slowly. Only once the form holds up.
Our guide to strength training at every age covers the basics in more detail.
How Much Exercise Do Teenagers Need?
Irish guidelines say children and young people need at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity every day. On three days a week, that should include muscle strengthening, flexibility and bone strengthening activity. The HSE has practical tips on helping children stay active.
An hour a day sounds like a lot until you count what teens already do. PE, Tuesday night training, the cycle to school, a swim on Saturday. A gym plan is one piece of that, not the whole thing. And if they actually enjoy it, they will keep at it.
What Can Teens Do Before They Turn 16?
Teenagers under 16 can build fitness through swimming, Family Fit classes and bodyweight training at home. Swimming builds strength and fitness with little injury risk, and the Gym Plus swimming page shows what is on at each club. Less confident swimmers can start with Gym Plus children’s swimming lessons.
Family Fit suits younger teens who would hate being the only new face in a room, because a parent is right there with them. At home, two or three short bodyweight sessions a week is plenty. Keep that going alongside their sport and they will arrive at 16 knowing more than a lot of adult beginners.
How Can Parents Help a Teenager Start Training?
Parents can help most by keeping the focus on health and enjoyment rather than looks, and by watching for signs of overdoing it. Constant tiredness, small injuries that keep coming back and skipped meals or sleep are all signals to ease off and talk to a GP.
Teenagers see plenty about appearance on their phones. Talk about what training lets them do instead: run faster, swim further, play better. Growing bodies need food and rest as much as exercise.
The easiest first step is a visit together. Find your nearest Gym Plus family club, then book a free family club tour and ask about under 16s membership. The October mid term is a handy time to start, with a week off school and no early starts.
