Member Profile: Professional Boxer Lynn Harvey

Lynn Harvey is feeling positive as she trains in Gym Plus Swords, preparing for her next pro boxing bout next month. The Dublin flyweight, nicknamed ‘The Hunter’, has recently decided to come out of retirement and is working towards the goal of attaining a European title by the end of 2018. Lynn, a former Novice, Intermediate and Elite Senior champion will make her comeback on Saturday, July 7th at the National Stadium. She chats to us in Gym Plus Swords about how she found her passion for boxing, her aspirations in her professional career and how she maintains her fitness and wellbeing at Gym Plus Swords.

Discovering her love for boxing

Lynn first discovered her love for boxing at 30 years of age when she joined a boxercise class. Three weeks later, with no prior training or experience, she agreed to take part in a white collar charity boxing show. Little did she know then that this decision would change her life forever and launch a career she had never dreamed of. Having suffered a tough defeat during that charity match, it spurred her on to joining an official boxing club and she vowed to become a champion.

After a year of intense training, true to her word, Lynn had become a novice All Ireland champion (2012). Followed by winning the intermediate and national elite champion titles in the ensuing two years.

Turning pro

Having conquered the amateur ranks, Lynn turned her attention to the pros.  She became the second female professional in Ireland to obtain a pro license and made her professional debut in 2015. However, in 2017 Lynn decided to step away from boxing for personal and professional reasons.

Today, having recently announced her comeback to the pro ranks, Lynn is training with Steven O’Rourke and in her words, a group of “very talented fighters.” With the unyielding support of her eleven year old son, Tyler, she is ready to fight again…. “I am planning to try the challenge for a European belt by Christmas 2018. That’s what I’m focusing on.”

Maintaining fitness and wellbeing at Gym Plus

Like all boxers, fitness plays a critical role in Lynn’s performance during training and fights. And Lynn had high expectations when it came to finding the right gym for her, including state of the art facilities and equipment. She was also looking for a team of motivated, knowledgeable and skilled instructors who could help her achieve her fitness goals. Lynn choose Gym Plus Swords just over two years ago and to this day she still remembers the warm welcome she received from the staff as she walked through the doors.

“The main reason that I love the club is the people.  The reception team are so thoughtful, kind and welcoming……you feel right at home.” Lynn is quick to praise Ernesta, the front of house manager and her team saying, “they always go above and beyond for the members.”

The workout of pros

So how does a professional boxer maximise their fitness before a big fight?

It all begins with a defined fitness goal and a comprehensive training programme. One of the perks Lynn receives as a member of Gym Plus is the expert guidance of trainers on site. She regularly books one-on-one meetings to assess her progress, “I find this hugely beneficial when working towards a goal or if I just need to ask advice.”

Lynn engages in a combination of cardio, strength and balance exercises to develop strength, power, speed and agility – allowing her to become a well-balanced fighter. In addition to weight training, Lynn likes to mix up her fitness routine with a group exercise class. “I started attending Boxercise classes in the beginning, which I love, but now I dip my toes into the RT24 classes (relentless training) and combat conditioning classes.” She has also sampled other classes to help her develop greater balance, mobility and flexibility such as yoga and pilates.

To finish off an intense training session, Lynn then retires to the gym’s pool and spa area to relax. “I usually go for a dip in the pool to unwind or visit the spa areas complete with sauna, steam room and jacuzzi. The relaxing atmosphere and music is enough to send me into a deep sleep for the few minutes I have spare!”

And when Lynn needs to clear her mind, centre her thoughts and indulge in a relaxing treat she pays a visit to the Gym Plus beauty therapist for a deep tissue massage or reflexology treatment. And if she’s lucky, a trip to the nail technician for much needed nail repair!
