Healthy Food Options For February

With spring just around the corner, now is a great time to look at what type of food options can help you to keep your fitness goals on track and why a balanced diet is perfect for what you need. Here’s a look at what we eat and how it supplements our efforts to achieve our body goals for 2022.

Vegetables

Vegetables are a vital part of enjoying a healthy balanced lifestyle. Thanks to their makeup, vegetables in any meal can help you to reduce the risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure and have a positive effect on blood sugar which keeps your desire to feed unnecessarily in check.

If eaten with a balanced diet, vegetables can help you to lose weight, thanks in part to their ability to prevent blood sugar spikes that increase hunger.

Why not try kale with your food during February? It’s a powerhouse when it comes to healthy eating as it contains a wide range of vitamins, is low in calories and one cup only contains 7 grams of carbohydrates. It’s an incredible vegetable that makes a great addition to your diet. Try our easy garlic butter fried kale recipe

Meat

In quantities, meat is a great source of protein. It’s not just protein though, as meat can provide a wealth of vitamins and minerals that help you to eat a healthy diet. However, with meat, it’s all about quantity as many experts believe more than 90g of red or processed meat can harm your health. This is mainly due to the fact meat is high in saturated fat, but chicken, pork and beef are rich in protein.

Chicken is a popular choice for many, in particular the chicken breast. This is because the chicken breast is the healthiest part of the bird to eat as it’s not as fatty as other sections like the leg or thighs. It’s also rich in B12 which keeps your body’s blood and nerves healthy, so for meat-eaters, incorporating it into your diet is a wise choice.

Fruit

Like vegetables, fruit is a great source of nutrition for the body, providing you with a wide range of vitamins and minerals including vitamin C.

Great for adding fibre to your diet as well, which can help you to maintain a healthy gut, fruits are also tasty, prevent digestive problems and reduce the risk of serious illnesses like bowel cancer, heart disease and strokes. They also make a great healthy dessert if you’re prone to sugar cravings after meal times. Try our super healthy yoghurt berries dessert recipe.

Seafood

Like meat, seafood has its place in a healthy balanced diet, as it includes a vast amount of vitamins and nutrients like iron, vitamins B and D, and omega 3s. All essential for a healthy body, especially for the heart, brain and bones.

Salmon is a great addition to any diet thanks to the fact it’s a great source of omega-3, an essential need for the body and only obtained through food.
