Why are Zumba Classes so popular?

Zumba classes are in over 200,000 locations in 180 countries. How come? Well, the main reason is Zumba is heaps of fun. Zumba classes involve getting together with a diverse group of people and shaking what you’ve got, whether you have natural rhythm or not. Dancing is a joy and sharing that with other like minded folks is a draw many find truly addictive.

The second reason that Zumba rocks is that underneath the fun facade, you find some serious fitness credentials. One class can burn between 500 and 1000 calories and many different styles of Zumba class have evolved, making it one of the most accessible forms of dance fitness around and allowing instructors to add their own unique flavour to their classes.

How do I choose a Zumba class?

If you like to keep your fitness fun and find you put more into your workouts when you’re really enjoying them, then you definitely need to try  Zumba classes. But how do you choose where to go when there are so many about all over Ireland?

The main Zumba organisation is pretty free and easy with who teaches Zumba, not requiring membership, qualifications or fees from instructors unless they choose to do them. This means you can find the quality of the class can vary quite a bit.

Make sure you choose a class that’s in a dedicated fitness space with a proper studio environment (the floors of church halls etc. weren’t designed for the purpose and so can be unsuitable for vigorous dance based exercise, putting you at risk of injury) and question your instructor about their experience and knowledge of Zumba before you commit.
