Reframe the Holiday Period

The Christmas season often gets framed as a write-off for fitness, a time when your usual gym routines go out the window and make space for parties, celebrations, indulgence, and a busy schedule of meeting up with friends and family.

With Christmas been and gone, and the quieter days settling in, what if instead of abandoning your goals entirely you used this period as a strategic reset
A chance to gently recharge, slowly return to your gym routine or try out a whole new routine, and return stronger both physically and mentally.

Use this Christmas Period as a Soft Reset

Use this Christmas period as a soft reset for yourself. Allow yourself to start into the New Year not full of good intentions and unrealistic resolutions. Rather, allow yourself space and time over Christmas to gently relaunch your old You, but better.

Allowing yourself to gently pick up your gym bag now and easing yourself back into some kind of gym routine means a gentle recalibration process. Back in the days of indulgence and Christmas parties, you may have felt as though you abandoned the gym and your fitness routines altogether. But now, you can restart your gym and fitness routine ahead of the January buzz.

Why December Is a Great Time for the Gym?

December is a great time for going to the gym. The gym floor is often quieter than normal. You can try different workout routines and new equipment without having to wait. Your PT has some more time to introduce new equipment to you. While you are on the Christmas break, you have more flexibility to make time for the gym without your usual work or school run constraints.

If you have overdone it in the run-up to Christmas, think of the holidays as an active recovery period for yourself. Here is how to do it.

Focus on Realistic, Kind-to-Yourself Fitness

Follow this simple Festive Reset Plan. This approach is not about perfection or strict rules. It is about giving yourself room to breathe, move, and feel good again without pressure. The goal is to gently reconnect with your body and rebuild positive habits at a steady pace. When you choose realistic fitness during the Christmas period, you set yourself up for long-term success rather than short bursts of motivation that disappear in January. Think of this plan as a gentle guide that helps you feel refreshed, confident, and ready for the New Year without overwhelming yourself.

Maintain Movement

Maintaining movement is key. If it is raining outside, hit the treadmill in the gym to walk or run 3km. If the sun is out, get out for a brisk walk.

Aim for a 20-minute run on the treadmill, which is about 2 to 3 km, or a 50-minute brisk walk.

Make this a daily habit, no matter the weather. You have the time now.

Hydration Comes First

After the excesses of Christmas, you are going to be dehydrated permanently. Whether picking up your fitness routine or not, you have got to rehydrate yourself.

Make a point of drinking 1 litre of water before lunch and another litre after lunch. For every cup of coffee you drink, drink a glass of water. Before heading out for a walk or to the gym, drink a large glass of water, take water with you, and keep drinking when you are finished.

This may look like an awful lot of fluid to take on, but we need at least one and a half litres of water daily to stay hydrated. And we are trying to create a new habit of drinking water before we end up snacking.

Rebuild Your Diet One Meal at a Time

Choose one meal a day that you spend eating mindfully. Take time to choose the ingredients, prepare them, and then sit down and be conscious of eating them.

While being conscious about eating, also be conscious about what you eat. Increase your intake of vegetables to at least three portions a day and eat a little protein with every meal.

Start reducing the chocolates now. The bin is always grateful for excess sugar.

Kindness Over Criticism and Avoiding the Resolution Trap

Remind yourself that this is not another hopeless New Year, New You challenge. Rather, you are simply picking up where you left off again, spending a few hours during the Christmas break active while enjoying moving and eating well.

Practice gratitude, reflect on what your body can do right now, and do not push yourself too hard. Simply enjoy the moment and praise yourself for being active and looking after yourself.
