Are you in need of mixing things up in the gym a little this New Year? If you are bored of your old routine, it is time for a change: out with the old, in with the new. Take a look around your local Gym Plus, check the timetable, and keep an eye out for new equipment.
Trying a new class is the perfect way to break a plateau. However, jumping into a new routine requires a smart strategy.
The “Try and Commit” Strategy
If you are interested in choosing a new routine and trying out classes, give yourself a “discovery phase.” Don’t worry too much about rigid consistency in the very first weeks of January. Give yourself permission to try and drop new classes this month until you find the ones that spark joy.
Once you have experimented, choose your favourite two classes and stick with them for 4-6 weeks. Don’t keep chopping and changing forever. Consistency is where results happen.
Start with a Beginner Mindset
When choosing a new class, aim for a beginner class rather than advanced. If you aim too high immediately, you risk ending up disappointed and unmotivated. It takes time to build a new habit. Allow your body to adjust to the challenges of the new movements.
Your local Gym Plus instructor will help you make the right class choices to ensure you feel confident. Keep in touch with them while you’re building your new routine; they are there to make sure you succeed.
10 Gym Plus Classes to Shake Up Your Routine
Not sure where to start? Here is a breakdown of our most popular classes to help you decide.
1. Indoor Cycle
One of the original high-intensity aerobic workout classes. Joining an indoor cycling class will take you to the max while having fun and sweating hard. It is low impact on joints but high impact on calorie burning.
2. Boxing
Boxing offers a wide range of physical and mental benefits. You are getting a full-body strength and muscle-building exercise while also improving cardiovascular health. Plus, it is an excellent stress buster after a long work week.
3. Body Sculpt / Toning / Core
Toning classes are generally a mix of sports drills, cardio, and high-intensity moves. These classes give you a full-body workout, involving reps using a mixture of weights and machines. They are great for anyone looking to strengthen and tone their bodies while improving endurance and posture.
4. Strength and Fitness
This class gives you the best of both worlds. It combines Strength Training (using resistance like weights or body weight to build muscle) with Fitness Training (exercises designed to improve overall health and cardiovascular capacity). It helps you perform physical tasks in daily life with ease.
5. Dance / Zumba
The difference between a dance exercise class and normal dancing is that the technique and intricate choreography are not the main focus. Instead of spending months nailing a routine, you simply show up, follow the instructor, build up a sweat, and leave feeling great! It’s exercise in disguise.
6. Circuits / Hyrox
Hyrox is a global phenomenon that aims to build the best body you can have while maximizing enjoyment. It combines running with functional workout stations. Whether you want to enter a countrywide competition or just train for fun, you can do it in a class or on your own in the gym. Talk to your local Gym Plus instructor for more information on our Hyrox-style training.
7. HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training)
HIIT is a technique where you give 100% effort in short, intense bursts, followed by short recovery periods. HIIT training keeps your heart rate up and burns a significant amount of fat in a short amount of time, making it perfect for those with a busy schedule.
8. Wellness / Pilates / Yoga
Our Wellness classes take a holistic approach to health. With options for Yoga, Pilates, and Stretch & Recovery, these sessions are designed to nourish the mind, body, and spirit. They leave you feeling physically strong, mentally clear, and emotionally balanced—the perfect counter-balance to heavy lifting or cardio.

FAQs
I am a total beginner. Which class should I start with?
If you are new to the gym, we recommend starting with a ‘Body Sculpt’ or ‘Wellness/Yoga’ class. These allow you to work at your own pace. Indoor Cycling is also great as you can control the resistance on your own bike.
What is Hyrox training?
Hyrox is a functional fitness competition that combines running with workout stations (like sled pushes or rowing). At Gym Plus, our Circuits/Hyrox classes simulate this training style, improving both your strength and endurance.
Do I need to book classes in advance?
Yes, classes at Gym Plus can fill up quickly, especially in January! We recommend using the Gym Plus App to book your spot in advance to avoid disappointment.
