Ahead of a run or morning workout I’s really important to have a healthy breakfast. Breakfast fuels your body and replaces energy lost during the long overnight fast. A healthy breakfast should combine slow-release complex carbs along with a source of vitamins and minerals, as well as hydration and some protein. Muesli with fresh fruit sort of ticks all boxes and therefore is many athletes’ favourite breakfast or post-workout meal. Making your own muesli is incredibly easy. It’s a good routine to get into as it gives you free choice over what you put into your day’s first meal.
I make this in small batches that last about a week to ensure all ingredients are fresh. I use a ratio of 2:1:1:1/2of wholegrain oats, mixed seeds, mixed nuts and raisins. I prefer to keep dried fruit to a minimum, instead relying on fresh fruit for healthy plant based sugars. A dash of cinnamon in the muesli aids in blood sugar regulation.

Method
- Take a large Kilner jar (should ideally hold at least 1l) and, placing the oats at the bottom, add the mixed nuts, seeds and dried fruit on top, sprinkle with cinnamon.
- Using a wooden spoon, stir the ingredients until they’re well mixed.
- Store closed in an ambient dark space.
- To serve: Take out your usual size portion of muesli, pour it into a breakfast bowl, top with the chopped ½ apple, the sliced banana and either yoghurt or milk/milk substitute. Apple juice actually works really well too. Enjoy!
